Make Your Cannabis Website ‘Float’ on Content

By James Kaufman Cannabis Associates Network

Effective content writing and SEO for your cannabis website can be extra challenging. The competition for web traffic is fierce in the cannabis space.

To help myself and others better understand content and SEO, I created a simple analogy using boats, which explains my choice of the photos used here in this article.

In writing this, I am aware that any and every theory on Search Engine Optimization is subject to attack. Many out there, including some in the cannabis industry, make good money by keeping SEO complicated, confusing, expensive and mysterious. Let me try to ‘pull the curtain’ back a bit on those lovable little wizards.

In the picture above there are two boats laying on the bottom of a dry lake bed. The blue and yellow boat that looks like it could float, is your website. The other boat laying on its side in disrepair is your competitor’s.

You, however, did it right. You took the time and spent the money and built a seaworthy craft (website) and now you are just waiting for a flood to raise your boat up, so you can sail it to profitable ports. But you wait and wait and wait for rain and it’s doesn’t come.

In this analogy, the water that fills ‘your’ lake that allows your boat to float and sail, is called content. Content comes in the form of blogs, press releases, news, articles and business pages. The content you need to raise your boat can’t be just any cannabis content. It must be original content. The search engines are smart, they know if your content is plagiarized from someone else and this won’t help to fill your lake.

The water that you use to raise and sail your boat cannot be from someone else’s lake. Let me explain.

Just as your blogs, press releases, news, articles and business pages won’t raise your competitor’s boat, their content won’t raise yours. So then, how do you beat your competitor?

One way is to have more original content in the search results of those searching for what you have to offer. To put it simply, if they have 60 blogs posts, then you have 600 blogs posts. If they bring a paring knife to the fight, you bring a sharp, stainless steel machete. A little dramatic but you get the point which is, learn how to write original blog posts.

What does ‘raising’ your boat, or cannabis website, really mean?

Back to the literal. You want to raise your cannabis website’s page rank and you want to raise it higher than all your competitors. Think of how incredible it would be if when someone typed the word ‘cannabis’ into the Google search bar, your website, or mine for that matter, appeared first. Let that sink in for a minute.

Now back to the analogy. Ok, you have filled your lake with content. Now you want your cannabis boat to be fast and nimble and consistently finishing (in search results) higher than your competitors. You want your cannabis boat to have the highest search engine ranking possible. You can do this by optimizing your cannabis content.
